NASCAR GRAND NATIONAL DIVISION, WINSTON WEST SERIES
POST-RACE NOTES – STOCKTON
NAPA AUTO PARTS 200 BY STOCKTON SPEEDWAY DODGE COUNTRY presented by HAVOLINE

AUG. 16

Eight races, eight different winners The eight Grand National Division, Winston West Series races this year have produced eight different race winners. The only other season in the history of the series to have eight winners in the first eight races was 1977. Two of the first eight races that year were combination events with the NASCAR Winston Cup Series, however.

Strong return The victory by Austin Cameron (No. 16 NAPA/NAPA Belts & Hose Chevrolet) at Stockton (Calif.) 99 Speedway came in only his second race since returning to competition last month. Cameron was sidelined in April after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer. He missed four races while undergoing treatment. In addition to notching his seventh career win at Stockton, Cameron also won his ninth career Bud Pole Award.

Top three in winnings With his $8,241 in winnings, Cameron moved to third on the list of Career Money Leaders in the series with $680,972.

Consistency continues With his runner-up finish, Steve Portenga (No. 77 King Taco Ford) retained his lead in the championship standings and extended his string of top-10 finishes this year. He is the only driver in the series to finish in the top 10 in all eight races so far this season.

Moving on up Scott Gaylord (No. 00 Oliver Gravity Separators/Denver Seminary Chevrolet) won the POWERade Power Move of the Race Award at Stockton, his third such award this season. He is the only driver in the series to win it more than once.

Strong rookieScott Lynch (No. 08 Yerf-Dog/The Orleans Dodge) continues to dominate in the chase for this year’s Raybestos Brakes Rookie of the Year Award. He was the top finishing rookie in seven of the eight races so far this season.

Chase for championship remains close The chase for the championship this year in the Winston West Series continues to be one of the closest overall battles in the history of the series. Only 100 points separate the top six drivers in the standings. The three drivers in seventh through ninth in the standings, meanwhile, are separated by only 10 points.

Wide representation The top five drivers in the championship standings represent five different states.

See-saw battle for Manufacturers’ Championship Chevrolet has moved back out front in this year’s chase for the Manufacturers’ Championship in the series. While Chevrolet and Pontiac each have four wins, Chevrolet leads with 53 points, while Pontiac has 49. Ford follows with one win and 40 points, while Dodge has one win and 34 points.

Air time The Stockton 99 Speedway event is scheduled to air on the SPEED Channel cable network at 9:30 a.m. ET Saturday, Aug. 30.
