NASCAR GRAND NATIONAL DIVISION, WINSTON WEST SERIES
POST-RACE NOTES – BAKERSFIELD
LUCAS OIL 150, OCT. 19

Winning at home Mike Duncan (No. 9 Lucas Oil Chevrolet) won the Lucas Oil 150 to claim his second win of the year and his second career victory. The win came at his home track, where he won the championship in the late model division in 2000.

Another Bud Pole Duncan set the fast mark at Bakersfield to claim his second Bud Pole Award of the year and the second of his career.

Adds name to list of winners Duncan became the 24th different driver to win a Winston West Series race at Mesa Marin Raceway. His crew chief – two-time series champion Bill Sedgwick – leads the list with six victories on the high-banked, half-mile track.

Winning from pole position The Bud Pole winner has gone on to win the race in seven of the 12 races so far this season. The feat was only accomplished three times in all of 2002.

Quick qualifier Scott Lynch (No. 08 Yerf-Dog/Orleans Dodge) turned in the second quickest qualifying time at Bakersfield. It marked the fifth time this season he has qualified for the starting spot on the outside of the front row of the grid.

Career best Brandon Miller (No. 68 Lucas Oil Chevrolet) had a career-best 7th-place finish in the event.

Bounce backSteve Portenga (No. 77 King Taco/Mission Foods Ford) was able to bounce back after falling a lap behind with a flat tire early in the event. He finished on the lead lap in 6th to continue his string of top 10 finishes this year. He is the only driver to finish in the top 10 in all 12 races this season.

Power boost Steve Schaefer (No. 33 FirstLine Chevrolet) gained the most positions at Mesa Marin Raceway, starting 24th and finishing 17th, to win the POWERade Power Move of the Race Award.

New to series The Lucas Oil 150 marked the series debut of several drivers. Brian Richardson (No. 4 RICH-PAK Chevrolet) finished 12th, while Tim Smith (No. 22 Integrity Financial Chevrolet) came home 16th. Meanwhile, Tony Gomez (No. 36 THOR California/Marjon RVs Chevrolet) was left with a 23rd-place finish after suffering mechanical trouble.
